World: Iceland, N Europe, N Asia migrating to W and C Europe, the Mediterranean, Middle East, India, SE Asia, Japan and north of the Equator in Africa, to overwinter. Kenya: Found around Lake Turkana and above 1600m in the highlands of central Kenya and the surrounding areas. Occurs in small numbers from late-November through March. Although generally uncommon it is nevertheless a regular visitor. The male (pictured above) has a very distinctive loud whistle call (hence its French name). |
