World: From central and east Tanzania, through Kenya to se Ethiopia and Somalia. Kenya: Common in open bush and woodland up to 1700m. Absent from the highlands and moister western regions. Most common to the east of the Rift Valley. A small Hornbill which is similar to the Red-billed Hornbill except that the male, pictured above, has a very distinctive red and ivory two-tone bill and the female (pictured on the alternate page) has an entirely black bill; neither male nor female has any spotting on the wing coverts. It may be confused with Jackson's Hornbill which has similar bill markings however Jackson's has similar wing covert markings to the Red-billed Hornbill. |
