World: Africa, South of 16° North excepted for forested areas in West and Central Africa.

Kenya: Locally common throughout Kenya except for the central highlands and the forested areas in the West.

The most distinctive and widespread of the Thick-knees found in Kenya, generally solitary or in pairs. Commonly found away from the edges of lakes and rivers, often in fairly arid areas such as Samburu where the bird pictured above was photographed. They're also not uncommon (and not always easy to find) around Lake Baringo, away from the shore on the western side of the Lake.
