World: Widely distributed throughout much of Northern and Central Eurasia, Western Alaska, North America. Overwinters in Africa, southern Asia, Central America, West Indies.

Kenya: Palearctic migrant seen above 1400m, mainly W of the Rift Valley.

A distinctive small dabbling duck which is seen in small numbers overwintering in Kenya. Favours small pools, streams and lakeshores where it feeds among the waterside vegetation.
