World: Africa: A bird of the central, eastern and southern regions of the continent. Widespread S of the Congo basin. In the North it occurs from central Nigeria East through E Africa to S Sudan, Ethiopia and nw Somalia.

Kenya: Mostly absent from the arid North and West. Elsewhere common and widespread around water (except the sea).

A small, distinctively marked plover which occurs singly or in pairs along the muddy edges of small pools, lakes and streams. The 2 black breast bands and red orbital ring easily distinguish it from the similar Ringed and Little Ringed Plover.
