World: West-central Eurasia from Romania to South-West and South-central Russia. In central Asia from central-South Russia to Mongolia, western China and South-West Siberia. Winters in Near and Middle East, Arabia and East Africa

Kenya: Regular palearctic migrant, October to March, which can be found in central and southern parts of the country. It is almost entirely absent from the coastal lowlands

The Steppe Eagle is very similar in looks to the resident Tawny Eagle. The 2 eagles can however be distinguished from their gape. The Steppe Eagle is the only one of the genus Aquila in which the yellow gape flange extends to the rear of the eye. In the Tawny Eagle the gape flange never extends beyond the middle of the eye
