    • 27/06/04: Lake Solai - more than 24 Grey Crowned Cranes, a pair of Greater Painted-Snipe, and an immature Great Spotted Cuckoo. (Fleur Ng'weno).
    • 27/06/04: Shampole - 10 Madagascar Squacco Herons also around few Glossy Ibis and one immature Saddle-billed Stork. Also one breeding pair of Collared Pratincole were found near the bridge over the Ewaso Nyiro. Towards the hot springs a pair of Pied Avocets with 3 chicks and also about 40 Curlew Sandpipers in full breeding plumage. (Itai Shanni)

    • 19/04/04: Upper Hill, Nairobi - Eastern Honeybird singing in flight. (Fleur Ng'weno)
    • 18/04/04: Near KARI Kathumani, about 9 km southeast of Machakos - Greater Honeyguide (singing male) and Wahlberg's Honeybird, in riverine woodland and thicket. Also a pair of Red-throated Tits. (Fleur Ng'weno)
    • 18/04/04: Mara - Migrants still present including large flocks of white storks, a few Caspian Plovers, Barn Swallows, a couple of Eurasian Rollers, Steppe eagles, Blackcaps and Willow Warblers. (Paul Kirui)
    • 17/04/04: Mount Suswa - Pallid Honeyguide, seen at close range in enormous fig tree at entrance to lava caves. Also, two Kori Bustards on grassland north of Mount Suswa. (Fleur Ng'weno)
    • 14/04/04: Loresho Road, Nairobi - Scaly-throated Honeyguide, chased by White-headed Barbet, end of Loresho Road near entrance to Kabete Campus of University of Nairobi. (Fleur Ng'weno)
    • 14-16/04/04: Tsavo East National Park - Within 10 km of Buchuma Gate a group of 8 Amur Falcons were seen in one > tree. Seen on the Voi River road east of Aruba Dam about 8 km a pair of Violet-tipped Coursers. At signpost entrance to Satao Camp approx a dozen Temmicks Coursers. Fire-fronted Bishops (approx 200 males) seen along road from Buchuma to Aruba, and sporadically throughout the park. Also Levaillants Cuckoo plus Violet Woodhoopoe along Voi River. (Duncan Himes)
    • 13/04/04: Kakamega - Bar-tailed Trogons (2 pairs one with juvenile). Eldoret - large group of Southern Pochard. (Dino Martins)
    • 10/04/04: NNP - Lesser Grey and Red-backed Shrikes (at least 20 individuals of each), Willow Warblers and Spotted Flycatcher in various corners of the park. Plus 3 Hobbies, 4 Lesser Kestrels, a Black Stork, 2 Tree Pipits, a Garden Warbler and one Whinchat along with a few Montague’s Harriers. Marsh Sandpipers, Greenshanks and one Little Stint can still be found at Athi basin dam. On the junction to Ruai Dam a fresh plumage Icterine Warbler. Zebra Waxbill in the tall grass near Kisembese ridge on the way to Olomanyi dam and 4 Rosy-breasted Longclaws next to Hyena dam and the Vulture pool.     • 07/04/04: Sokoke - numerous Asian Lesser Cuckoos, including several of the strange red-headed and red-rumped forms, also a Thick-billed Cuckoo. A few Eurasian, and a single Black-and-White Cuckoo were also amongst the migrants feasting on the caterpillars.(Brian Finch, Anne Bishop, Richard Bishop, Simon Valle and John Hornbuckle)
    • 06/04/04: Sokoke - There was a marked passage of Eurasian Rollers moving over the forest, and Red-backed Shrikes inside the forest. Sabaki - 60 Avocets plus 1000 Madagascar Pratincoles already. Also Osprey, a migrant Peregrine, a single Red-throated Pipit, a Rufous Bush Chat, 3 Eurasian Rock-Thrushes, a couple of Willow Warblers a half-a-dozen Red-backed Shrikes, and a Spotted Flycatcher. There were also a few lutea and flava Yellow Wagtails along the rivers edge.(Brian Finch, Anne Bishop, Richard Bishop, Simon Valle and John Hornbuckle)
    • 05/04/04: Shimoni - dark Eurasian Honey Buzzard. Camp Eden - Brown-headed Parrots. Along the Shimoni Road a pair of Collared Palm Thrushes. Towards Kingfisher picnic site 2 groups of Swifts (around 20-25 birds) were seen, both looked as Pallid Swifts with the brownish appearance, medium size and pale edge secondaries. At the junction, a Lizard Buzzard was sitting on a small Acacia. Also seen was a Eurasian Thick-knee. Hyena dam (by the bridge (where the tarmac ends) a Eurasian Cuckoo and a Black & White Cuckoo.     • 27-31/07/03: Sabaki Estuary we saw several Black-Headed Gulls in non-breeding plumage among the huge mixed flocks of sooty Gulls, Lesser and Greater Creasted Terns and Saunders Terns and Pied Avocets. There were good numbers of Curlew Sandpipers, Grey Plovers and Terek Sandpipers and probably first arrivals of Ruddy Turnsones, which were very mottled. Between the dunes and the shoreline there was a flock of Lesser Flamingos and Several Greater's. Also 2 pairs of Golden Pipits. Out towards Gongoni Salt Pans several Fire-fronted Bishops.     • 23/07/03: South Coast in an area between Diani and Chale - 1 early Common Tern, many Sand Plovers (Greaters and Lessers), Grey Plovers and Curlew Sandpipers. Also a lone Crab Plover in South Coast (unusual S of Watamu). In the Kaya forest (NB - this is not any of the IBA Kayas) Black-collared and Brown-breasted Barbets plus a few other coastal 'specials' (like Mombassa Woodpecker, Red-tailed Ant Thrush).     • 23/07/03: The June Mombasa Birdwalk visited a Nyali garden and, despite worries about only seeing Indian House Crows and House Sparrows the short walk recorded - three species of Swallow (Ethiopian (in large numbers), Lesser Striped and Mosque), a fantastic view of a male Black Winged Bishop and a close encounter with 4 White Browed Scrub Robins displaying madly and in open view. Also 25 or so Senegal Plovers, pair of Pangani Longclaw, Curlew Sandpipers, 3-4,000 terns and gulls way out on the estuary 1/2 of them being Sooty Gulls, single juvenile Greater Flamingo, over 700 Lesser Flamingo and a lone first year Black-headed Gull.     • 01/06/03: Magadi Road (adjacent to the seasonal pool on the left hand side of the road at the base of the descent, a couple of kilometers on the Nairobi side of Oltepes) - Fire-fronted Bishop. Also Capped Wheater on the entrance track into Orlegasaille prehistoric site, along with several Cardinal Queleas in full breeding plumage, and numerous breeding Chestnut Weavers all over the general area.     • 22-23/05/03: Kilgoris (60kms to the north of Masai Mara GR on the High plateau above the Oloololo escarpment). Dark-capped Yellow Warbler, Arrow-marked Babbler, Black Cuckoo-shrike, Darnaud's barbet(Usambiro race), Red-collared Widowbird, Yellow-billed Kite, Ovambo Sparrowhawk. (Paul Kirui)
    • 20/05/03: Kakamega forest reserve (Isecheno) - pair of Yellow-bellied Wattle-eyes (found some distance northeast of the forest rest house), Buff-spotted Flufftail, African Broadbill (displaying) plus a pair of Blue-headed Bee-eaters was present. Another Broadbill was found in Yala reserve along with Chapin's Flycatcher, Red-chested Owlet and Little Grey Greenbuls (these seem to be rather common). The pumphouse trail proved best for Great Blue Turaco (5-7 birds), and a male Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon (a acomparitively rare sight) was also seen. NB: In addition to the Stonechats around Kapsabet (the larger swamp along the C39 road) which have been reported as having black wings and apparently lacking any red (originally reported by Brian Finch and Itai Shanni). Bernd saw a similar Stonechat in Kalunya glade in Kakamega forest, a small white wing-patch was only visible in flight. (Shailesh Patel and Bernd de Bruijn)
    • 19/05/03: Mountain Lodge - a male Abbott's Starling and around 30 Oriole Finches. Entering Nakuru NP pair of Grey-rumped Swallows flew past (another pair was seen again in Massai Mara on the 26th). (Itai Shanni)
    • 18/05/03: Seasonal lake at the back of the Ngong Hills (Ntashat). About about 200 Whiskered Terns, and among them were two White-winged Terns that missed the migration. (Fleur Ng'weno)

    • 08/05/03: Taita Discovery Center (TDC) - Four-coloured Bush-shrike were calling in the forest (Mt. Kasigao). Also dueing period - Bat Hawk seen from time to time at Little Governors' Camp also at the BBC Big Cat Dairy Camp nearby. Long-toed Plover resident in Musiara Swamp.     • 26/04/03: Along the Magadi Rd - Little Bittern (the nominate Palearctic race, minutus) along the Olorgasailie River. Still some Sedge Warblers and few Barn Swallows around. About 35 km south of Kisemese - a adult male Golden Pipit and Lesser Grey Shrike. Plus the first African Cuckoo for the season was calling at one point! (Brian Finch, Bernd de Bruijn and Itai Shanni)
    • 25/04/03: Feral Lovebird, Namaqua Dove and Madagascar Squacco Heron (3 new species for the Mwamba list). Plus 13 Blue-naped Mousebirds (only the 2nd record for Mwamba). Also Marsh Warbler on the observatory nature trail. And recently 100 Collared Pratincoles over the Gede plantations on the edge of Arabuko-Sokoke along with Ayre's Hawk Eagle.     • 18-21/04/03: Just outside Saiwa Swamp 40-50 European White Storks on a ploughed field (seemed rather late in leaving but others have also noted the same this year). Also Eurasian Bee Eaters were still to be found. On a small dam/swamp near Saiwa Hartlaub's Marsh Widowbird (in non-breeding plumage). Also around the swamp; Marsh Tchagra, Black-billed Weaver, Grey -winged Robin, Mountain Illadopsis. At Kongelai and Suam River; House Martin, Lesser Blue-eared Starling, Bronze-tailed Starling. Finally at the Marich Pass, Sigor and the Wei Wei Valley; Shining Sunbird and a pair of Lead coloured Flycatchers. (Heather Elkins)

Plus a possible Broad-tailed Paradise Whydah which, if confirmed by the rarities committee, is a very exciting sighting indeed as this bird was believed to be extirpated from Kenya. Along the road to Siakago (the 3rd entrance from Embu town, signposted 11 Km) - Eastern Nicator, Zanzibar Sombre Greenbul, Yellow-bellied Greenbul, Black-headed Batis and Black-bellied Sunbird (very common in the valleys).
