World: Africa from Senegal, Mauritania and Gambia East to Ethiopia and Aomalia and South to northern South Africa except for forest areas in western andd central Africa.

Kenya: Mostly absent from the East and South-West; elsewhere widespread but uncommon.

A solitary bird of dry woodland and bush up to 2000m (usually below 1200m), breeds all year round except November and December. Although generally uncommon it does sometimes become numerous in Tsavo and in Baringo district.
