Trip Reports at Kenya Birds:

Bird Counts, Recording and Harris Idiosyncrasies

A brief word about our methods of working and recording. We have some strict rules on what we count and what we don't, this helps to keep us honest and stops us from repeating some of the real howlers of our early expeditions! Firstly we only include sightings, we do not include species identified by call alone. Secondly both of us have to have seen the bird and we both have to agree with the identification (any doubt from either of us disqualifies the sighting). So even if it's something obvious like spotting small feather dusters pogoing in the grass (Jackson's Widowbird) then ... unless we both see and agree, it doesn't get into the count. With the development of our website we've also started spending more time trying to get usable photographs of as many of the common species as we can. Oh ... and we're also a bit on the lazy side. We enjoy watching birds and are quite happy to spend hours with a cold drink, a pair of bins and a lawn full of Go-away Birds .... just observing their behaviour. The result is that we clock a creditable number of species .... but if you are happy with including species identified by call, are less lazy than us and select your route for maximum diversity then it's entirely possible to clock 600 species in a 3 week visit!
