This is the most common East African pipit, found in open habitats to over 3000m. It has an undulating flight and can often be seen perching on posts and bushes. On the ground it walks with a strutting gait and often holds itself very erect. There is much controversy about the taxonomic classification of this particular bird. Some authorities classify it with Anthus richardi (Richard's Pipit) and some with Anthus novaeseelandiae (Australasian Pipit). We have gone with Zimmerman and Sibley and Monroe in making these conspecific.
