World: Africa - Widely distributed S of Senegambia except in arid regions.

Kenya: Wooded habitats S of 2°N up to 2100m. Most common in the W of the country.

A shy bird found in small flocks in dense foliage. Quiet and unobtrusive and almost entirely arboreal, rarely coming to the ground. It feeds on fruit and can be locally common around fruiting fig trees (its gizzard is adapted for grinding fig seeds).

There are 3 subspecies present in Kenya, T. c. gibberifrons (pictured above) is found in the W, T. c. brevicera is found East of the Rift Valley and T. c. wakefieldi is found along the coast. The coastal subspecies can be distinguished from the others by its green tail.
