World: Occurs across E Africa in Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania as well as ne Zaire

Kenya: Found almost everywhere in Kenya below about 2300m except in the arid north east and the coastal strip

A widespread and common woodpecker, generally seen alone. The bird pictured above is a male, in the female the red is confined to the nape; the crown and malar stripe are black with white spots
