World: Central Eurasia. Winters from the Mediterranean across to se Asia and south as far as S Africa.

Kenya: Passage migrant which is common from September through to April in all areas with water including the coast. Particularly common on the Rift Valley lakes.

A somewhat slender looking Sandpiper with a fine straight bill which looks rather like a small Common Greenshank. It is found singly or in small groups, wading along the water's edge picking at the surface. It is fairly common along the south shore of Lake Baringo.
