World: Africa from Senegal and Gambia eastwards to Cameroon and the southern Central African Republic, s Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia then southwards to nw Angola, Zaire, Burundi and Tanzania. From there it extends southwards to eastern South Africa.

Kenya: Occurs in the higher rainfall areas of the South and West and along the coast. Absent from the arid North and West of the country.

Usually found solitary or in pairs, foraging on the ground. It does, however, regularly perch in tress or bushes or on posts. It is very similar to the Pangani Longclaw (found in the East of the country) but they can be told apart by the extent of the yellow colouring. In the Yellow-throated this extends right along the underside to the under tail-coverts. The Pangani Longclaw also has a more orange coloured throat.
