World: Palearctic region - found across Europe to Central Turkey and NW Iran through to Western Russia, Kazakhstan to southern and eatern Siberia, Mongolia and nothern China. Winters in western Europe, the Mediterranean region, N Africa, Middle East, Iraq, Northern India, SE China and southern Japan.

Kenya: Vagrant at the Sabaki Estuary.

Shorter legged and stockier than the Black-headed Plover this species is only occasionally recorded in Kenya. Its primary food consists of earthworms, insects and other invertebrates. It will take insect larvae (especially when feeding in fields rather than on mud). It exhibits both diurnal and nocturnal habits and can be particularly active on bright moonlit nights.
