World: Africa, From Senegal east to Chad and the Central African Republic. Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia, south to South Africa

Kenya: Locally common up to 2300m mostly in the south and West of the country, especially in the Rift Valley

A distinctive small plover which prefers short grass or bare mud adjacent to open water and is usually easy to see around ponds and marshes at Amboseli. Generally easy to distinguish from other plovers. The juvenile is similar to the juvenile Chestnut-banded Plover but has a distinct superciliary stripe which extends back to the nape
