World: Very widespread, in the Americas occurs from S USA to N and E South America as far as northern ARgentina. In Africa occurs S of 15°N inc Madagascar and in Asia it ranges from the Indian subcontinent E to Burma.

Kenya: Locally common on relatively quiet waters including coastal inlets.

This is a primarily nocturnal bird which feeds mainly on seeds, fruit and grain. This can make it a nuisance around paddy fields where large numbers may congregate. It will also eat insects and small aquatic invertebrates but these form a very small part of the overall diet.
