World: Africa: Subsaharan in a band from Senegal to SW Ethiopia. Its occurrence in W and NW Kenya represent its SE limit.

Kenya: Locally common between 600-1500m in bush and wooded areas of the W and NW. Primarily found N of the Equator except around Kisumu, Muhoroni and Fort Ternan.

Found in small flocks or family groups foraging for insects in tall grass and around shubberies. These are noisy birds which are particularly vocal in the early morning and evening. This individual was photographed at Lake Baringo which we have found to be a good place to see them.
